Malta Nomad Residence Programme

Malta offers a digital nomad visa program aimed at attracting remote workers who wish to live and work in the country while enjoying its rich culture and beautiful scenery. Here are some key points about the program:

Eligibility to the Malta Digital Nomad Visa

Applicants must demonstrate their ability to work remotely using telecommunications. They must also be third-country nationals (non-EU, non-EEA, and non-Swiss).

Additionally, applicants must meet one of the following three criteria:

  • Work for an employer registered in a foreign country with a valid work contract.
  • Conduct business activities for a company registered abroad in which the applicant is a partner or shareholder.
  • Provide freelance or consulting services to clients with permanent establishments in a foreign country, supported by contracts with those clients.

Individuals contracted by a foreign company to provide services to its Maltese subsidiary are not eligible for the Nomad Residence Permit.

Furthermore, applicants must have a minimum gross annual income of €42,000. Those who submitted their applications before April 1, 2024, will still meet the previous annual gross income requirement of €32,400.

Application Process

  • Documents: Prepare necessary documents, including a valid passport, proof of employment, proof of income, health insurance, and a rental agreement.
  • Submission: Applications are typically submitted online or through a local embassy.
  • Processing Time: Processing times can vary, so it’s advisable to apply well in advance.

Duration and Renewal of the Malta Digital Nomad Visa

The visa allows for a stay of up to one year (12 months), with the possibility of renewal.

To be eligible for renewal, Nomad Residence Permit holders must provide a bank statement that shows payment transactions made in Malta, demonstrating that they have resided in the country for a cumulative total of at least five (5) months within the past twelve (12) months.

Additionally, Nomad Residence Permit holders must continue to meet the relevant renewal criteria. Those who submitted their applications before April 1, 2024, will retain the previous annual gross income requirement of €32,400.
